Phi Phi Island ThailandSaturday, July 06, 2013
Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley (home of Maya Bay) have a rare natural beauty and while these islands are the most beautiful part of Thailand we've experienced... it is important to note something that no travel brochures will share and that is even Phi Phi is not immune to plastic bottles and bits of trash washing up on the beaches, it's unfortunate that it happens in such a beautiful part of the planet, but it seems to be a reoccurring theme throughout our travels in Thailand. It would be wonderful to see more effort dedicated to maintaining and preserving the pristine beauty of these islands.
Getting ThereFrom Krabi and Ao Ngang, you can book ferry tickets at several travel agencies and guesthouses (cost 350 baht pp) which included transport from our guesthouse to the ferry pier. The ferry trip from Krabi to Phi Phi island is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Upon arrival you'll be required to pay 20 baht pp, the national marine park fee.
Getting AroundPhi Phi is an ideal walking island, you can walk from Loh Dalum bay to Ton Sai bay in 10 minutes. No major roads exist here, it's a delightfully easy-going village of cobblestone pathways with the main mode of transportation being walking or riding a bicycle.
AccommodationsFresh off the ferry you'll be bombarded by touts on the pier, trying to sell you on guesthouses and hotels. We recommend exploring accommodations on your own, it's a very small walking island, guesthouses are everywhere, you won't have any problem locating and finding one that suits your budget and taste.
Night LifeWatch out for staying too close to Loh Dalum Beach, if you want to get some sleep at night, that's not the place. When night falls, Loh Dalum beach becomes the center for night life on the island. Lined with beach front restaurants and bars, the fire shows are great entertainment and the music is pumping until the wee hours of the morning... every night.
Things To DoBoat excursions, snorkeling trips and scuba diving are the most popular activities on and around Phi Phi. You can take a long tail boat or speed boat out to other nearby islands, perhaps the most well known destination being Maya Bay, made famous by the movie "The Beach" with Leonardo Dicaprio. We went on a day trip boat excursion and loved it, we'll have that video posted soon.
